On November 13, there will be a concert featuring SPSSO at the Grand Hall of the Philharmonic dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the birth of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
Vasily Sinaisky, one of the most prominent Russian conductors of our time, will be on the orchestra podium this evening. The orchestra will perform Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic opuses of various years and fragments from the opera The Tsar’s Bride.
SPSSO joins the multiple congratulations on the jubilee of outstanding Russian musician Alexandra Pakhmutova. This June, the Orchestra had a great pleasure to present the composer’s recital evening at the Grand Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonia. We wish Alexandra Nikolaevna good health and infinite creative energy.
An agreement has been reached about a concert tour of SPSSO in China in December 2015. Petersburg’s ensemble will present concerts in the country’s greatest cities; under the baton of Peter Feranec, a conductor from Slovakia, it will perform music of Tchaikovsky, Dvořák, Glinka, Smetana, and Rachmaninoff.
The St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra opened its new 48th season with a concert in the Mirror Hall of the Princes Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace. Under the baton of the prominent Belgian conductor Walter Proost, the orchestra played music of Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms.
On September 21, as part of the musical festival dedicated to Igor Stravinsky at his birthplace in Oranienbaum, the chamber ensemble of the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra gave its first performance. The musicians performed the famous Soldier’s Tale by the eminent Russian master. The initiative of setting up the new ensemble belongs to Chingiz Osmanov, well-known violinist of St. Petersburg and concertmaster of SPSSO, who became its artistic director.
In September SPSSO will sign a contract with famous British composer and rock musician Jaz Coleman. For the next two years, Jaz will become a composer in residence of our orchestra. Many interesting recordings and concerts in St. Petersburg, Europe, and the USA are planned.
On September 17, SPSSO starts a unique project — free lessons of music for Petersburg’s schoolchildren. On the stage of the Mirror Hall of the Princes Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace, kids will learn about musical instruments and hear the sounds of a full orchestra. Musical opuses will be backed up by videos and comments of the program’s author and presenter Yuri Serov. The lessons will be held on September 17, 18, 19, 25 and 26, beginning at 12:00.
The appearances of SPSSO at the Musica Romantica 2014 festival in Switzerland won excellent reviews; some excerpts are presented on the Press About Us page. They note the high professionalism, colorful sound and impressive interpretations of Petersburg’s musicians.
Early in August, the orchestra’s team finished recording the new album of prominent British composer and rock musician Jaz Coleman. The CD will be titled Nirvana Dialogues and dedicated to the memory of Kurt Cobain, leader of the band Nirvana who passed away 20 years ago.
On Saturday 16 August, the SPSSO musicians came back home from a successful concert tour in Switzerland. The orchestra played five concerts with various programs in Saas-Fee alpine resort as part of the Musica Romantica international music festival, cooperating with outstanding musicians and conductors from Belgium, Brazil, the Netherlands, Romania, Switzerland, and Singapore.
